On the 24th of June 1571, Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, established a settlement in Maynilad, which became the modern-day city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. He becomes its first Governor-General.
Here is Lakan Dula, one of the previous kings of Maynilad.
Etymology of Manila
A Spanish friar arrives on the island searching for the nearest settlement. He comes upon a group of natives trading for goods. The friar asks in his native tongue and uses his hands to communicate "Sir, where can I find the nearest village here on your island?" The natives thought he was asking where their goods came from answered him - "Doon sa may Nilad" (There where the flowers bloom). And thus the term was born.
